That person normally did shoots, not events, and worked in exactly that way. These are conditions in which you can see the difference between someone who has done it a hundred times and someone who is trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cEverything as it comes\u201d selection.<\/strong> You get eight hundred files and have to go through them yourself to find the twenty you will use.<\/p>\n\n\n\nA delivery deadline that stretches.<\/strong> Conference material that arrives after three weeks has zero value for PR and social media. The topic has gone cold, and you are explaining yourself to the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou do not know who will turn up.<\/strong> Some offers on the market come through agencies acting as brokers: the order is taken by a brand, and the event gets whichever photographer happens to have a free date. The rate does not have to be low at all, but you do not know the level of the person who will actually appear. If flu were to knock me out on the day of the event, I could afford to put a proven professional in my place. In that case I recommend photographers I have worked with before, not random people from a classified ad. A photographer who took the job for half the rate does not have that option: any replacement will charge the normal price for the same coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/span>When you overpay<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nTo be fair in the other direction too, because it is just as easy to overpay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A high rate makes sense when something concrete stands behind it: a team for multi-day coverage, material delivered during the event, advertising licences included in the price, experience in your specific event format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This also cuts across specialisations. A photographer with a strong portfolio in another field, for example fashion or product photography, deserves their high rates, but day to day works in controlled conditions: they set up the light themselves and can repeat a shot. At an event nobody will repeat a speech or an awards presentation, and the light is whatever you find. It is a different craft. That is why you should check the portfolio specifically for event work, not in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
